Immunology

Understand how the immune system works and how immunological tests are used to diagnose infection, allergy and autoimmune disease.

Immunology explains how the body defends itself and how laboratory immunology helps diagnose disease.

You will study the cells and organs of the immune system, innate immunity, complement, antibodies, MHC and antigen presentation, and T- and B-cell responses. You will then apply this to immunity to infection, vaccines, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, transplantation, tumour immunology and immunohaematology.

The course closes with immunological techniques, including agglutination, ELISA, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and lateral flow tests, the serological diagnosis of infection, and quality assurance in the immunology laboratory.
