Bacteriology

Master medical bacteriology, from bacterial structure and lab diagnosis to key pathogens, antimicrobial resistance and infection control.

Bacteriology gives you a thorough grounding in the bacteria that cause human disease and the laboratory methods used to find and identify them.

You will cover bacterial structure, physiology and genetics, sterilisation, biosafety and host–pathogen interactions. You will then learn specimen handling, microscopy, culture, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Systematic bacteriology covers the major groups, from staphylococci and streptococci to mycobacteria, Enterobacterales, Vibrio, anaerobes and spirochaetes.

The course closes with infections by body system, infection prevention and control, public health bacteriology and quality management, with emphasis on typhoid, cholera, meningitis, tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance.
