The Pearson VUE Trick (PVT) is a method candidates use to predict their NCLEX (nursing licensure exam) result before it is official [1]. It is unofficial and not 100% accurate [1]. You try to register for the exam again on the Pearson VUE website. If the system refuses, candidates read it as a pass [1,5]. This guide shows how the trick works, how to read each message, and the official routes that confirm your result. NCSBN, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, says official results come only through your nursing regulatory body (NRB). They arrive within six weeks of the exam [10].
The PVT is an attempt to register again for the NCLEX you just took, on the Pearson VUE website [1,2]. Pearson VUE is the company where you register for the NCLEX [12]. The idea is that the registration system blocks candidates who passed from registering again [1]. A blocked registration may mean a pass. A system that lets you reach the payment page might suggest a fail [1,3].
Timing advice runs from one to two hours [3] to at least 24 hours [2], with two to four hours in between [4,5]. Trying in the first hour is generally considered less reliable than waiting two to four hours [4].
Take the NCLEX and allow some time to pass.
Log in to your Pearson VUE account [5].
Try to register again for the same exam. The system asks for your credit card information [5].
Read the message that appears.
Many candidates stop before they submit payment [2]. Submitting the registration shows whether it is accepted [5]. A completed registration can charge your card [5].
The good pop-up says the exam was recently scheduled and another registration cannot be made at this time [5]. Candidates read it as a likely pass [5]. Another message says a registration is already open. One reading is a possible pass [1].
The bad pop-up lets you reach the payment page or shows a registration confirmation [1,2,5,6]. A registration confirmation is what people call a bad pop-up [5]. A bad pop-up is not the end of the story. Some candidates report seeing one and later being shown as passing [6,17].
For an early look, use Quick Results if your NRB offers it [7], or your state board's online system if it has one [11,12]. The PVT is not an NCSBN service [2,6]. For the official result, wait for your NRB [10].
Quick Results is a paid early-access service for NCLEX results [7,8]. Some candidates can see their result two business days after the exam, for $7.95 charged to a card [7]. NCSBN calls that timing an estimate. Results come as early as 48 business hours, with no guaranteed timeline [8]. Your card is charged only if your result is available [7]. The result is unofficial and does not give you permission to practice as a licensed or registered nurse [7]. NCSBN lists the participating NRBs. Check your state or territory on that list [7].
Some state boards, such as Alabama and Texas, post results in an online system [11,12]. Alabama tells candidates to allow 24 to 48 hours. Its system updates once each business day by 9 am [11]. Results stay online for only 30 days [11], so check and save them in that window. Texas receives results from Pearson VUE within 24 to 48 hours and posts them to the Texas Nurse Portal. Its permanent license follows within 15 business days of a pass [12].
In other states, search "[state] board of nursing license verification" and enter your name [4,6]. The search is free [4]. An active license listing signals a pass [4,6].
Your NRB sends the official result within six weeks of the exam [10]. Do not call NCSBN, Pearson Candidate Services or the test center for it [10]. If six weeks pass without your result, contact your NRB [10].
Four routes can show your result. Only your NRB issues the official one [10].
The Pearson VUE Trick: hours after the exam. Timing advice runs from one hour to at least 24 hours [2,3,4]. One candidate tried it about four hours after [15]. Another tried too early and saw a message that a registration was already open [9]. This result is unofficial [1].
Quick Results: two business days after the exam for some candidates, for $7.95 [7]. This result is unofficial [7].
State board online results systems: Alabama and Texas, 24 to 48 hours [11,12].
Official results: sent by your NRB within six weeks of the exam [10].
Some candidates on nursing forums report results as early as the next day [13,14,15]. These are individual reports, not official statements.
One candidate tested on a Thursday afternoon and saw a pass on the Arizona board's website the next day [13].
Another candidate reports that a friend tested on a Tuesday, saw a license on the board's website on Wednesday, and got Quick Results on Thursday [14].
A third candidate saw results on the Virginia board's website the next day. The candidate adds that it usually takes two to four days, and sometimes one to two weeks [15].
One candidate says a hold placed on an exam can delay the release of Quick Results and state board results. Holds most often last 24 to 48 hours, and sometimes 72 hours or more [16]. NCSBN's Quick Results page does not mention holds [7].
Your card is charged only if your result is available [7]. NCSBN treats the release time as an estimate [8], and it does not say why a result may be missing [7]. Check that your state or territory is on its list of participating NRBs [7]. Meanwhile, check your state board's online system if it has one [11,12], and expect your official result from your NRB [10].
Some candidates on nursing forums call the good pop-up a reliable pass signal [9,15]. Some candidates report wrong results, and others report accurate ones [1]. Some candidates have reported false positives and false negatives.
How often the trick is right is not known for sure [1]. NCSBN's results page gives no accuracy figure for the trick [10]. The trick is not 100% accurate [1], and its accuracy is never guaranteed [2]. Some published percentages are based on forum data and informal surveys [6].
The trick costs nothing by itself [5]. If the new registration is completed, your card can be charged [3,5]. The Texas board lists the Pearson VUE registration fee as $200 [12].
No, not as your result. The PVT result is not your official result [1,3], and it is not a substitute for it [3]. Wait for Quick Results or your NRB's official result before you act on the trick [3,6]. Pearson VUE does not officially endorse it [3], and NCSBN's results page does not mention it [10].
Timing advice runs from one hour to at least 24 hours [2,3,4].
It can happen. Some candidates report a bad pop-up and a later pass [6]. Wait for Quick Results or the official result before you treat a bad pop-up as final [2,6].
It may work for both the NCLEX-RN (registered nurse) and the NCLEX-PN (practical nurse). Nothing about that is official [2].
Your NRB sends official results within six weeks of the exam [10].
No. Quick Results is a paid NCLEX service at $7.95, available to some candidates two business days after the exam [7]. The PVT is an unofficial attempt to register again [1,2,5]. Only your NRB sends the official result [7,10].
The trick is not 100% accurate [1]. Some candidates report wrong results, and others report accurate ones [1]. NCSBN's results page does not mention the trick [10].
It can. A completed registration can charge your card [5]. Many candidates stop before they submit payment [2].
Yes. Candidates report it [6,17]. Wait for the official result.
